SEED CSR

Over the course of post-Independence India’s corporate life span, the contribution of corporate firms’ to societal improvement has had tremendous change in its form. It has grown from being corporate philanthropy or donation and charity, to strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) that benefits the firms as well.  CSR  has gained even greater momentum since India’s ratification of the Paris Accord in 2016 giving sustainable development a large amount of significance in the country’s international standing in terms of fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations. India is a country that is characterized by its diversity in demographic, resources, culture, religion, language and all other spheres of society. Where on the one hand this diversity gives the nation its unique identity, on the other hand, it is also the root cause of a vast variety of social issues. It is a country that is developing but with massively underutilized potential and a considerable population that is difficult to provide for. The latest Indian census indicates a 490,000+ community of transgender people in India. They are recognized legally as the “Other”, and treated exactly like their legal namesake – the transgender, Hijra community of India is till date sidelined, stereotyped and stigmatized. They seem to every “normal” person as someone who is different and unnatural. It is this lack of acceptance and discrimination that is the primary cause of their terrible conditions of lifestyle and why there seems to be no escaping this plight.
